2100/2200 Series FAQs

[1]

Q

What is the function of the 2100/2200 models?

A

The 2100 and 2200 series are multifunction scalable Internet security gateway. The series starts off by simply sharing Internet access amongst a group of users. The functionality can be enhanced by enabling feature sets to provide secure remote access and site to site VPNs direct connection services.

Q

Can I cascade a hub off the 2148/2188 that is integrated into the unit? What about connecting a 2100/2200 to an ethernet switch?

A

Yes. Simply connect one of the 2148/2188 hub ports to the cascade port on your hub. The cascade port may also be known as an MDI port, crossover port, uplink port or daisy chain port. To connect a 2100/2200 to an ethernet switch, simply use a crossover ethernet patch cable between a hub port on the ePipe device and an Ethernet switch port.

Q

Can I use a combination of analog modem & ISDN Internet connections (dial up or dedicated) for my VPN?

A

The 2100 series and the 2242 modelwill transparently bond multiple lines of PSTN or ISDN or a combination of both. This is particularly useful where the main connection is ISDN while the analog modem(s) provides backup in the event of the link failing.

Q

How do I deploy an ePipe VPN that delivers 512k in a site to site VPN?

A

The 2202 and 2242 units will deliver beyong 512k through a broadband connection. Alternatively, you will need an ePipe gateway plus 4 ISDN terminal adaptors, together with ISDN connections and Internet accounts at each location. Otherwise you could use a 2188 or 2181, 8 modems with PSTN connections and Internet accounts at each site. Only one connection in the whole VPN needs to have a fixed IP address (generally at the head office site), regardless of the number of sites.

Q

What is the difference between the 2148, 2188, 2181, 2202 and 2242?

A

The second digit relates to whether the unit supports broadband (2) or dialup only (1). The third digit relates to the number of serial ports in the unit, and the fourth digit relates to the number of Ethernet ports in the unit. Hence, a 2181 has 8 serial ports but only one Ethernet port (for connection to the LAN), the 2202 has no serial ports but two Ethernet ports, one for the LAN and one for a broadband connection. Both the 2148 and 2188 have 8 Ethernet ports, but these are not available for broadband connections (hence the '1' in the second digit) - this is an 8 port LAN hub. All the models in the 2100 and 2200 range provide the same shared, secure Internet access, VPN and remote access capability and Direct Connection Services.
